Fownes Law Office was established in Liverpool, N.S., in 1985 upon Allen Fownes' admission to the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society. In 1994, Mr. Fownes was admitted as a licensed Foreign Legal Consultant by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of New York.
In 2003, Allen joined the firm Crowe Dillon Robinson, of Halifax, N.S. to delve more deeply into files involving property, estates and personal injury civil litigation, corporate law including amalgamations, reorganizations, restructuring, creditor arrangements, secured financing, and appellate work.
Mr. Fownes, a graduate of Dalhousie Law School, Halifax, N.S. completed his undergraduate studies in Political Science and Economics at the University of Kings College, Halifax in 1981. While at Kings, he served as Treasurer of the Student Union and was elected Student Representative to the university Board of Governors, and was awarded a "Silver K" for contributions to the university. Upon graduating from Dalhousie University Law School, Allen was awarded the Canada Permanent Trust Company Prize for the Highest Standing in the Equity and Trusts course, creating a natural inclination toward that area of his practice today.
Allen served his articles of clerkship to Hon. Gerald B. Freeman (later County Court Judge, subsequently elevated to a Justice of the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal) ; Justice Freeman’s former partner, Her Hon. Judge Anne E. Crawford, was later appointed to the Nova Scotia Provincial Court.
In 1994, Allen pursued his personal interest in New York City, and made successful application to be admitted as a licensed New York Foreign Legal Consultant. Fownes Law Offices now have an established liaison with the law offices of Emanuel Baetich Esq., New York. Mr. Fownes is Of Counsel To Attorney-at-Law to Emanuel Baetich, a very well-regarded senior attorney, which enables Fownes Law to offer professional legal assistance to Americans on Canadian and Nova Scotia points of law. Conversely, through the New York office, Fownes Law can offer referral assistance to Canadians seeking assistance or clarification with respect to points of Federal or State law.
